Middle School Meet

Saturday, the Heat hosted a Middle School Invitational. Funded by the Yuma Community Foundation, this inaugural event should be the beginning of a new Yuma tradition. 79 swimmers from 9 schools participated. Heat swimmers Katie Hodgin (8th - Ron Watson), George Gould (6th - Yuma Lutheran), Emily Hieber (7th – Gila Vista), Augustina Edmondson (6th – Castle Dome), and Ryan Keough (7th – Crane) each won all three of their individual events ! Castle Dome, with 37 swimmers, dominated the team scoring.

In addition to being a wonderful event for the middle school students of Yuma, the meet introduced many potential swimmers to the Heat. We have had a great spring, and currently number over 80 swimmers. However, we feel that Yuma should have more swimmers in the water. Our present pool situation will allow for approximately 130 swimmers in the year-round program and another 60 with the summer Sandsharks. We are moving in the right direction, but we are not there yet !!!

Special thanks to the parents, families, and friends that helped make this a great event. A group of “poolies” (pre-boot-camp Marines) were on hand to cover the timing duties. Senior swimmers Myriah Frabasilio, Blanche Wallis, Dana Wallis, Alejandra Hernandez, Ashton Hobbs, and Danny Keough made significant contributions during the competition.

Complete result, scores, and meet records can be found on our Meets & Results page.

Practice Schedule Variations

The next few weeks will be crazy ! Check the website (NEWS !! page) for the latest practice changes. The summer calendar is again attached (excel file) to help you keep things straight.

Board Positions

  • Ron Corbin has done a terrific job as our treasurer this past year; however, he has a new job and just doesn’t have the time available to continue. So, we are looking for someone to join the Board as Treasurer ! If you have any interest in this position, talk with Ron … soon. Thanks.
  • Our Registrars, Nancy Jones & Alison Keough, are getting our paperwork straightened up. It would help if they had a lap-top computer to use at the pool. If anyone has a lap-top that they don’t use and would like to loan it (or donate it … think tax write-off !) please let us know. The lap-top needs to be 1 GHz / 64 MB RAM / Windows 98 or better. Thanks !

Meets

The Tucson Ford Southwest Classic and Flagstaff Beat the Heat deadlines have been extended until Wednesday, May 23. If you want to attend one of these meets, talk to your coach … TODAY. Meet information can be found on our Meets & Results page.

Summer Sandsharks

The Heat will once again run an Imperial Valley Swim League (IVSL) summer team. Called the Sandsharks, this group swims from June 11 through August 4. Last year some of the Heat swimmers participated in the Sandshark meets. If that sounds interesting to you, check out the Sandshark page on our website. There is an IVSL Registration Fee of $11. Heat swimmers should NOT register with the City of Yuma ! A special registration form is attached. Return the form along with a check for $11 made payable to Yuma Heat.

Also, if you know of anyone that might want to start their competitive swimming with the Sandsharks, please direct them to the website … full registration forms are available on the Sandshark page.
